Janey is 22 years old. She is a patient at the river valley facility for the criminally insane.
Doctor Meghan Greer arrived at .r.v.f, c, c. This was her first day. She has a psychology degree from a prominent university. She has specialized in the treatment of the criminally insane. She wrote an award-winning paper on the subject. She arrived at the facility. She already had an I.d card. She presented it at the gate. She was granted admission. She parked at a staff parking area. She parked her car.
She finished her coffee she put it in a mug. She put it down. She exited her car. She wore a simple blue dress with pink flower pastures. She wore simple shoes. She went inside.
She was greeted by the administrator Dr. Erin Thompson. “Hello Meghan,” Erin said. “Hello, Erin,” she said. “It is so good to have you hear. I am so happy you accepted our offer. ” Erin said.”I am so happy that you made the offer. “Meg said.
” working at a hospital for the criminally insane is not easy. It is not for everyone. It is a difficult job. It is a necessary profession. I am. glad you see that. ” Erin said. “I do. ” Megan said.
She gave her a tour of the facility. She then introduced her to a patient. She was in a small room. The room was padded. The young lady was 19. She wore a gray v neck scrub top. Her hair was braided into a ponytail. She was not wearing any pants. She had a panty underneath. She was barefoot.
“Why is she not wearing pants? ” Meghan asked. “When she first arrived, she took off her pants. The nurse I’m in charge of on the floor kept putting them back on her. She would just take them off. She is calmer when she does not wear pants. We let her go without pants. We are a pretty lax facility. ” Erin exclaimed.
“She has not said a word sense she arrived?” Meghan asked. “Not a word. We have tried to get her to talk. Our efforts have not been successful. We tried to get her to write or paint. She just stares at the paper. She has not been violent. She has almost been catatonic. It is almost like she is in a walking coma. ” Erin said.
“Can I talk to her?” Meghan asked. “Of course. ” Erin said. She slipped her key card into the slot. The door opened. They walked into the room. “Hello, Janey. I have someone I want you to meet. ” Erin told her.
“This is Meghan. She is a new psychologist on staff. ” Erin said. ‘Hi, Janey. It is nice to meet you. “Meghan said. Janey did not say anything. the staff used first names around patients. They wanted to create familiarity. Meg took her hand. The staff used physical context. Janey was considered a high-security risk when she arrived. It became evident that she was no threat. They were careful around her. They expected she might become violent but had not.
Meghan took her hair out of a ponytail she combed her hair. ” you have beautiful hair. “Meghan said. Meghan used touch as a means to connect with her patients. She wanted to present herself as a motherly figure. Sometimes it worked with patients it did not. Sometimes it was natural. It was always worth a try. She braided her hair into a ponytail.
She was very pretty. She had pale skin. The orderlies did take her outside to get fresh air. She did walk in just a t-shirt and panty. They were concerned about someone seeing her passing by. It was a risk that came with the territory they supposed. They let it go. She looked stoic. She did not smile or frown. It was almost a lifeless stare.
Meghan just sat with her. ” I want to help you. I don’t work for the state. I work for you. I only want to help you. “She said.
Meghan went to her office. She put up pictures of her husband and four kids. She sat down. She asked for Janey’s file. She looked it over.
Janey was 19 years old. She had been at the facility for about a year. She was being held under a decision can be made. She had been deemed unable to stand trial. A final decision had not yet been made. While she could still be able to stand trial, it seemed unlikely that she would ever go to trial. It was not sure if she would ever go free. Her guilt was not certain.
Janey was the oldest daughter of James and gina Dixon. James owned a chain of furniture stores though out the state and two in a nearby state. Gina was a bookkeeper for the business. She had five siblings. Janey was smart. She had gotten good grades. She stayed at home when not at school. She worked at one of her dad’s stores. She was a perfect daughter.
James was a member of the chamber of commerce. He was a member of the town board of selectmen. He was a power broker in the community. There had been rumors that he was physically abusive to his wife and kids. They were never proven.
Gina had given birth to a daughter. It seemed like a loving family. James was a tough guy. He had a temper. He was liked and disliked. Even those who supported him admitted that he had character flaws.
One night, neighbors heard noises from the Dixon home. They called the police. The police went. They found him dead. he had been stabbed downstairs. He was stabbed multiple times. Gina was found dead in her bed. She was stabbed multiple times. Most were before death but a few were post-mortem. Gina was stabbed in the heart breast, genitals, and legs. Jim was stabbed in his heart, genitals, and stomach. The two older brothers were stabbed multiple times. It was more random. None of the younger kids were harmed.
Janey was found blood all over her clothes and body. She wore a blue sweater and denim skirt. She was barefoot. Blood was on her clothes and legs and feet. She had cuts on her hands. She had a knife in her hand and she was over the body of her dad.
” honey! Put down the knife. “The lead officer instructed. She gently put down the knife. They photographed her in bloody clothes. They took off her bloody clothes They changed her into media scrubs. They photographed her hands.
The blood was analyzed. The blood was from all of the family members killed.
Her DNA was found on all four victims. Hee cuts were consistent with attacks. It looked like she killed her parents. the evidence seemed to be lining up against her.
There was no evidence linking any of her siblings to the crime. There was no evidence of anyone else in the house at the time.
Janey acted like she was in a catatonic state. She never spoke. All attempts to talk to her failed. A social worker attempted to talk to her. That failed.
They had her checked out at the hospital. Nothing was found to be physically wrong with her. She was sent to the mental ward.
She was arrested and sent to lock up. She had to be helped to get undressed and bathed. She had not said a word to staff or inmates. She was helped to get dressed in the orange prison uniform. She got a lawyer but would not speak to her lawyer.
At her arraignment, the lawyer asked for her to be remanded to a mental health facility for the criminally insane for a mental health evaluation. The lawyer said that she could not participate in her defense. The district attorney agreed to allow her to be evaluated.
She was sent to the river valley center. She was put through a battery of tests. She did not say a word. They tried other methods to communicate but those failed. She seemed to be in some kind of waking coma. There were differences of opinion among the experts who interviewed her. She was interviewed by staff at the center and a psychologist who worked for the defense and prosecution.
They all agreed that she was not competent to stand trial. She was ordered held until she could stand trial. In that year, no progress had been made.
Meghan felt for her. Megan had two daughters. One was 16, one was three months. Her son was journeys age. Janey could be her daughter. She seemed so sweet. She could not believe she would do this. Could she commit such a brutal crime? Did she just have enough?
If she had done it, she could understand it. It was wrong. She could understand it. It made no sense that it was not her. Meghan still had her doubts. she would not communicate that to her co-workers. She would especially not communicate that to Erin. It was not up to her. Her job was to help her. That was all.
Before she left for the day, she came to see Janey. Janey had diner in the meds Hall. she eats with other patients. They talked. She did not react.
After dinner, she was given a bath. At night patients wore diapers. She never protested the diapers. She did not seem to have any reaction to it. She was given a hospital gown.
She came in. She said good night. she hugged her. She hugged her back. I was not sure if she had made a connection. She hoped that she had.
She went home. She hugged her kids. The day had taken its emotional toll on her. ” you ok meg?” Her husband asked.”yes I am ok. It’s a patient. The evidence says she is a cold-blooded killer. A mass murder. I just don’t see it. I know I should not get sucked in. “Meghan said.
” she is not Julie. “Her husband said. ” I know that. Maybe I am not cut out for this. “Meghan said. ” you don’t believe that. You’re perfect for this. You should not surrender your feelings. It’s not your job to determine her guilt or innocence. Maybe you can get through to her. Maybe in doing that, you will help to get to the truth. “Her husband said.
She knew that he was right. She would try to help her. She hoped that she would not get too sucked in. She hoped that her empathy would not be her undoing. She feered that it would.
She went to see her. She took her hand.” Hello honey. “She said.
” I can’t begin to know whats going on in your head. I know you’re afraid to leave your shell. I am here for you. Whatever happens, I want to help you through it. I can’t begin to know what you sent though. The heck you had to endure. You can get past this. This does not need to define you. “She said.
She just sat with her. Neither said anything. She tried to gain her trust. She hoped eventually she would come around. She had no idea if that would happen. She would not give up.
